✍️ From Shag Carpet to Smartphones: Groovy tech tips for writers ✍️

The AOM Insider

Hey Reader,

I grew up in the '70s with orange shag carpet and olive green counters/bathtubs/appliances. You too? Read on for how you can improve your writerly systems in a groovy way.πŸ‘‡

What technology and shag carpet have in common

Before we revisit avacado-colored telephones, let's pan to last year when I got locked out of my email service.

I freaked out. I stomped. I jumped up and down and cried.

Do you know how many hundreds of emails I've written in ConvertKit?

It was like being locked out of my 1970's bedroom, complete with flower-power wallpaper and lava lamps. So many memories in that space...

...And I feared I'd never recover it all.

(The emails, not the memories. I'll never forget the slumber party with Pam Williams when we jumped on the bed and pretended she was pregnant. For tweens who still played with baby dolls but dreamed of motherhood, this was perfectly logical imaginative play.)

My email setback meant losing years of creative work and collaborations. However, after 36 hours of 785,978 back-and-forth emails with tech support, I recovered my account and rejoiced with exceeding great joy.

When it works, technology helps us do more in less time. This week on the podcast, author and publisher, Michelle Rayburn, shares her systems and favorite software (both free and used) for writerly task organization.

New Podcast drop: πŸŽ™ Episode 111: Efficient Work Methods for the Empty Nest Writer with Michelle Rayburn

Writers and creatives have a lot on their to-do listsβ€”so much so that priorities tend to get muddled.

(Do I post on Instagram or write 500 words? Start a podcast, or work on my keynote? Go live on Facebook, or write my newsletter?)

(Just writing that list up there gives me hives, #amIright?)

So how do we choose one priority over another? And what even is a priority at this point, right? πŸ€ͺ

🎯 In episode 111, Michelle Rayburn shares three criteria for organizing tasks:

  1. Examine excuses
  2. Do what works for you
  3. Find a buddy to remain accountable

That first one is a real kick in the pants (wait til you listen), but she gives grace on the second. And if you really want to Do The Thing, number three (3) is your go-to.

New Podcast Schedule

In this, our FOURTH season of the Authentic Online Marketing Podcast, we will release one episode per month. Meanwhile, the private podcast will drop 1-2 times monthly, featuring behind-the-scenes outtake interviews and marketing updates.

Because the podcast is only 25 minutes, I have even more stellar content to share from our interview, so be sure you're subscribed to my private podcast. πŸ˜ƒ

If you're already subscribed but can't find it, search "2024 Marketing for Creatives" in your podcast app with the pink image to tune in!

And for goodness sakes, don't get locked out of your email service. πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ
